BRIDGEPORT, WV (WBOY) – The first Girls in Aviation Day of Central Northwestern Virginia (NCWV) will be held at the Robert C. Byrd National Center for Aerospace Education on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
There is a large aviation sector at NCWV airport, and officials say there is a shortage of pilots and mechanics, and one way to address the job shortage is to introduce more young women in aviation-related careers.
“It’s really a way to exhibit your kids, if they’re sky gazing and they love airplanes, Saturday is a day to let them see, smell and touch. We’re going to have static displays of planes outside, so if a kid in West Virginia has never flown or been on a plane, this will just be a great way for them to get up close and see, smell, and touch an airplane ,” said Tracy Miller, president of the Mid-Atlantic Aerospace Complex.
Miller said that although it is called Girls in Aviation Day, any young person interested in aviation is welcome to attend the event with their parent or guardian. Facebook event can be found here.
