Smiths Detection and Pangiam announced a collaboration to accelerate the development and adoption of open architecture (OA) in aviation security.
OA connects hardware, software, and algorithms from different product vendors, allowing technology to be managed centrally so customers can achieve operational efficiencies, improve safety outcomes, and work with an ecosystem more relevant and accurate data.
Smiths Detection and Pangiam will leverage the talent, assets and expertise of both companies to enable the transfer of 3D images from the Smiths Detection HI-SCAN 6040 CTiX computed tomography (CT) cabin baggage scanner to the information of computer vision of Pangiam, thus enriching information and analysis. available to supervisory authorities. As part of the collaboration, the two companies will host a series of technology demonstrations designed to quickly develop and field new capabilities, unlocking new innovations.
The collaboration aligns with Smiths Detection’s Ada initiative (which we reported last month) – to accelerate the adoption of open architecture in aviation, ports and borders, defense and urban security – and the collaboration of Pangiam’s DARTMOUTH project with Google Cloud – which uses intelligence artificial intelligence and pattern analysis technologies to digest and analyze large amounts of data in real time and identify potentially prohibited items in carry-on baggage, checked baggage, air cargo and shipments.

Lab demonstrations began in August 2022, and the resulting solution(s) are expected to reach international airports for advanced testing in early 2023, ready for full deployment thereafter.
